Cherbourg was originally a Roman camp, which developed into a town over the years. It was then known as "Coriallo". The name Cherbourg only appeared around 1026 though.
In the 14th Century the castle was surrounded by a strengthened rampart. Many battles occured around Cherbourg during the 100 years War (1337-1453), title passing from the French to the English on many occassions. It finally fell to the French again in 1450. It was in 1783 that the French King, Loius XVI decided to create a naval port here. The Revolution interupted work but by 1813 the outer harbour was inaugurated. During the Second World War it was an important German port. It was liberated on June 26th 1944.
