Places to visit near Dunkirk

Bourbourg

Bourbourg is an historic town about 20 kms (18 minutes) from Dunkirk.

There are plenty of historic places to visit here.

1. The Gothic church, parts of which date from the 13th century (Eglise Saint-Jean-Baptiste) is the main point of interest here. In the choir there is a large work of art by Anthony Caro called "The Chapel of Light".

2. The Old jail. Dating from 1539 (Spanish occupation period), there are several dungeons and strongrooms in this three storey (current 18th century) building in the main square.

3. If you are there on Tuesdays or Fridays make a point of visiting the old Fishmarket (halle au poisson) which dates from 1587.

4. The old town walls which were built by King Philip II of Spain.
